Labor Day Thread... I was at my mom's yesterday and she asked me if I wanted my grandmother's good china, I wanted to see it, but of course. She got out a couple of pieces and on the bottom, it read "union made."
I said absolutely I want this china! My Gramps was a bus driver, they got points for safe driving, and Gran used those points to get this china that she only used on Christmas and Thanksgiving. I'm honored to have it!
Today we celebrate Labor Day and recognize the many contributions of labor unions, at a time when we are seeing approval for Labor Unions increasing, a good thing for all of us.
As Paul Wellstone said, "We all do better when we all do better." I heard my good friend Mayor @craigfitzhugh use that same line often, it continues to be true.
Unions won us weekends, paid time off, sick leave, social security, minimum wage, anti-discrimination laws, 8 hour work day, overtime pay, child labor laws, 40 hour work week, pensions, collective bargaining rights, whistleblower protection, privacy rights,
age discrimination laws, and parental leave. Labor unions built the middle class and there is no question that we need more power in the hands of workers today.
A few years ago, Emma Grace, a student enrolled at a school in HD13, won a National History 1st Place Award for a documentary she made her senior year, it's called "Rough in the Bunch"
and the subject is women garment workers organizing in East Tennessee in the late 1930's. I hope you will watch and enjoy, it's wonderful and just 10 minutes long. Thank a union!
