If you want to post stories, you can go to your profile or home page and tap your profile picture with the "+" button. You can take pictures with filters or maybe post some texts. If you would like to make highlight(s), then tap the "+" button under your profile picture at your profile page. In highlight(s), you can make a compilation of your picture(s) that you have posted on your story, such as "Travel", "Music" and "OOTD".
It is easier for people to view your stories if you keep them in your highlight(s). You can view people who have viewed your stories up until 24/48 hours since you posted them. People can still view them if you put them in your highlight(s).
In between home page and "+" button is an Explore page, you can search for accounts, places and tags on here. You can also see public posts by different accounts. I usually spend most of time here, scrolling. There is also IGTV. This is what people use to post videos with more than one minute duration.
In between the "+" button and your profile page is the Activity page. You can see your recent activities, such as which post(s) that you liked and which people who have followed you, recently.
You can also send direct message to other people. If they have a private account, then they have the option to allow you to send message(s) to them. You cannot see whether or not they have seen the message, not until they accept your message request.
