I think publishers can learn a lot from Netflix when it comes to second chances. Example 1: Lucifer was cancelled by Fox as it ‘wasn't performing to a broad enough audience’. Netflix took a chance on it and since then, it's repeatedly hit the Top 10.
Example 2: Karate Kid spinoff Cobra Kai was available via YouTube’s subscription service Red, small fry really compared to Netflix. Netflix took it on and it’s become one of its fastest-rising series.
Obvs, this shows the awesome power of Netflix. But it also highlights the magic that can happen when a) some new attention is given to an asset initially dismissed because its audience is deemed too narrow and b) how a different platform can help quality wade through the noise.
I guess what I’m saying is, if more publishers focused less on pushing ‘shiny and new’ and more on ‘making something shiny from what's already out there', exciting things could happen.
