By the way, now that so many are interested or faking expertise in Kosovo, it is a good time to remember that one of the greatest Yugoslav actors, and the first Eastern European actor to play in Cold-War Hollywood, was Bekim Fehmiu, an Albanian from Kosovo born in Sarajevo.
His major role was in a film about Roma life in Vojvodina, known in English as _I Even Met Happy Gypsies_ (or _The Feather Gatherers_ in Serbo-Croatian). A year later, he played the leading role of Odysseus in the mini-series L& #39;Odissea, which made him a star in Europe.
Unfortunately, he failed to reproduce his success in Hollywood. His first film there, _The Adventurers_, was loosely based on the life of the Dominican diplomat-cum-playboy Porfirio Rubirosa, who might have also been a political assassin for the dictator Rafael Trujillo.
Despite the arresting story and its "airborne world premiere" as the in-flight movie of Boeing& #39;s first Superjet making is way from NYC to LA, it was poorly received and critics came to see it as more of an unintentional comedy than a serious film.
He continued to be featured in minor Hollywood films, including one in 1977 in which he was a Palestinian terrorist. His success was more significant in European films and in local theater. His final role was supposed to be in a film called Genghis Khan, which was never produced.
The end of his career came shortly after he walked off the stage in 1987, in protest of the government& #39;s treatment of Albanians in Kosovo. He died in Belgrade in 2010, perhaps by his own hand. He played in 39 films and and 8 television films/series.
