encourage kids (once they are at least 7 or 8 years old) to be a part of developing consequences. Kids need to be coached through the idea of natural consequences but once they are they really get it and can be much more powerful incentive when they are a part of the process...
For example, in March when we first started letting my son play video games before dinner, he sometimes whined to be interrupted to come to dinner.
Me: "What do you think is a natural consequence for not following directions while playing video games?"
7 yo: "Lose game time."
