At the traditional Labor Day start of the presidential campaign, we are in the beginning of a coordinated media assault on Trump’s base. It seeks to dampen the enthusiasm of Trump’s core voters, plus reverse his growing approval and support numbers among blacks. 1/x
It started with the Atlantic piece, hitting at Trump’s national security and military voters. Followed closely by lesser hyped stories about Trump’s disdain for evangelicals and blacks. Look for those stories to be amplified this week as the Atlantic hysteria fades. 2/x
There will be more. A replay of Trump’s troubles with women will certainly be rolled out, as will continued attacks on his coronavirus response. Whether the stories to be told are true or not is not important. What is important is the media will pick them up run. 3/x
Sources in position to defend Trump will be ignored and denigrated, witness Sarah Huckabee Sanders comments on the Atlantic’s allegations. She was there and is willing to go on record, yet the left-wing media won’t report her claims and is actively disqualifying her. 4/x
Forget context. Any opportunity to hit at Trump’s standing with any subset of voters will be taken. The Obama impersonator story is a good example. The media use this as evidence of Trump’s disdain for blacks, leaving out that it was for an RNC video that never ran. 5/x
Context like that which undermines the claim, however slightly, is counterproductive. The point is not to give voters information they need to make a choice, it is to get groups of voters who have already made a choice not to act. It it fundamentally anti-democratic. 6/x
The left-wing media, more than ever and far more overtly, has completely abandoned any pretense of objectivity. If an educated citizenry is essential to a functioning democracy, then the media by its attempted suppression of the vote has rejected its role and responsibility. 7/x
In so doing, they have made Trump’s self-interested “enemy of the people” charge into a self-fulfilling prophecy. A media that seeks to empower its chosen candidate, that disrespects the will of the electorate and the legitimacy of the government, is an enemy indeed. 8/End
