Recently operated upon a genuine poor patient. I have facility for charity. Very meek person, admitted with bad heart failure and badly damaged heart valves. Prior to surgery, I asked him we can operate upon you day after, are you content? With folded hands he shook his head 1/
Called his wife to inform her about planned surgery. Your husband needs a heart valve op, we can do it day after. He will feel better;& be able to get back to good life. Do you have any questions? Even meeker person, hands folded to say thank you, eyes down and shook her head. 2/
Called her at completion of surgery. Op went well, his heart is working well. I don’t expect any difficulty. Do you have any questions? She started crying. The nurses got busy comforting her, a glass of water was on its way and she spoke for the first time. 3/
You saved my “suhaag”. And leapt to touch my feet. As a matter of instinct I leap away. Been brought up in a manner that it’s not appreciated that a lady touch a mans feet. Man a lower mortal. Lady = a goddess in one form or another.4/
The context of suhaag is easy for Indians to appreciate, may be harder for others. And I do hope that someone else picks this concept up to explain how suhaag is different from a husband and a bread winner. It has a deeper meaning that I’m at a loss to explain. 5/
He’s doing well and ready to get home shortly. To most clinical questions he replies in monosyllables. So one day I’m surprised when he asks how many days he would need to be off work. Leads to my Q: what’s the nature of your work. (I had forgotten) 6/
Very very quietly, trying not be overheard by other patient’s in the unit; he says mochi. I’m a cobbler. He was clearly embarrassed by his trade and didn’t want many people to know that. 7/
Me: do you get good, regularly spaced perfect stitches when you work?
He: very proudly, each time perfect.
Me: with a wink and smile, ME TOO.
He broke into the widest smile and all could see despite his mask. 8.
