Considering September has that fresh, ‘back to school’ feel…

Here’s 10 things I’ve learnt about owning your career, which no-one told me at school (a thread):
1. People will always tell you things are ‘unrealistic’, which for me is always a sign from the universe saying YES. Unrealistic things are exciting things. Reality is a comfort zone. Don’t let other people’s limiting beliefs stop you dreaming big.
2. On that, people will sometimes shoot you down because of how they feel about THEMSELVES. Maybe your big idea triggered an insecurity, comparison or moment of jealousy in them. That’s not your fault. You’re not accountable for how your dreams make other people feel.
3. You’ll usually find if you’re blaming lots of people / situations / challenges on why you’re NOT doing something, most likely YOU’RE the obstacle.
You’re in your own way, but it’s more comfortable to deflect onto other things than accept that you’re probably scared, apprehensive or self-doubting.
4. Self-doubt is normal. It’s a fallacy that we ‘overcome’ self-doubt. What, in fact happens, is that we learn to live with self-doubt. I’ve run my own business for 6 years and that self-doubt voice is still there - I just know how to quieten it now. Shush, little gremlin.
5. Annoyingly, all the really obvious self-care stuff does work. Exercise, sleep, eating well, long baths, reading. Your career & business is a product of you - LOOK AFTER YOURSELF FIRST.
6. It’s very easy to have ideas. Everyone has ideas. The difference between people that do and people that dream is ACTION. Want to be a writer? Start writing. Want to dance? Put on your dancing shoes. Honestly, ideas without action mean you’re standing still.
7. The UK education system makes us specialise pretty early, which may mean you pick the ‘wrong’ subjects for your desired career later on. Don’t panic. It’s never too late to study again. And we’re all winging it anyway.
8. Also, it’s really NEVER too late to change lanes. Switch careers, go back to education, start a business. Whatever it is. You have one beautiful, precious life & work is a huge part of your time. If you’re not happy, don’t be scared to try again.
You don’t owe anyone to stick at something - abandon everything apart from yourself.
9. Freelance is a big, scary world but it’s also full of possibilities. When you become self-employed, the world of work suddenly opens up in ways you haven’t expected. It’s not for everyone, but honestly it can be amazing.
10. Networks are important. Surround yourself with people that support, encourage & respect you. Don’t know who they are? Start being those things to others, and the right people will come to you.
