I just hit 200 films for the year on @letterboxd so I thought I’d do some highlights
january 3 - the last black man in san francisco is actually one of the best films I’ve ever seen. majors deserved every award for best supporting actor. the cinematography and prod design created a gorgeous atmosphere
january 14 - just mercy aptly portrays how the US is built on the systemic oppression and exploitation of Black people. do more than just watch the movie (donate to BLM or bail relief funds) but a very informative watch to start learning
february 2 - tomboy is such a subtle and beautiful exploration of queerness and forming identity. I know everyone was obsessed w portrait this year but tomboy might be sciamma’s best
february 28 - present.perfect. uses live stream footage to show how people long to be noticed and to entertain in their day to day lives. even more, the film shows how we all long to feel important but many people are never given the spotlight
march 3 - emma (2020) had amazing style and comedic beats. I would love to hop into that world for a day
march 15 - hedwig and the angry inch has earned every bit of its icon status. the highs and lows hit hard
march 16 - greener grass is probably the most unforgettable movie I have ever seen. it successfully pushes satire to the extreme and makes fun of suburbia like nothing else
march 19 - laurence anyways was my first Dolan film and I couldn’t help but fall in love. each character was so human it was incredible.
march 20 - when I heard a northwestern professor made a queer film set in chicago, I had to watch it. princess cyd is so modern in its portrayal of sexuality and I love the fashion
april 9 - (tw: rape) roll red roll is an incredible documentary about how women in small towns are endangered by the toxic masculinity and misogyny of powerful men and boys
april 12 - persona has some of the best cinematography I have ever seen (and I won’t spoil anything else)
april 19 - when I heard oom sha la la in the trailer, I knew saint frances would be a treat. add in strong female characters and an evanston setting - I was sold
april 21 - considering my complete lack of focus in quarantine, the meetings of anna surprised me with how it enthralled me with its deliberate stillness. I was totally hooked and immediately inspired
april 28 - nashville weaves 30 threads into a nonstop entertaining film infused with gorgeous music and incredible characters. love actually wishes it was nashville
may 3 - the half of it is such a beautiful celebration of queer introverts and platonic friendship. go watch it please!
may 11 - in the mood for love is one of the all-time greats for a reason. it nails every aspect and has an unmatched allure
june 4 - @ava is my hero so it’s no surprise that 13th is spectacularly informative
june 5 - the watermelon woman not only shines a light on Black lesbian culture but also the plight of academics and artists trying to uncover the forgotten and secret histories of their predecessors
