We obvs talk a lot about Indigenous history/racism/social justice here. But it brought tears to my eyes today @Glenbow when at the Kent Monkman installation, my kids asked “why again did they take the kids away?” and I saw their fear when I answered “bc they were Indigenous” 1/
In that moment they asked “so they would have taken us, too?” And me and @chrisroachYYC looked at each other and at them and had no answer other than “yes probably”. Their response was that they were glad things had changed 2/
But we still have more Indigenous children in foster homes/child services than we had in residential schools. I know things might look different, but have they really changed? We talk about this stuff all the time and my kids are still shocked when they are reminded so vividly 3/
With orange shirt day coming up, I urge you to know that glossing over it once a year is not enough. This is a constant, necessary and painful conversation. And if you have the privilege of not answering your child’s question with a “yes”, reflect on how you help change things 4/
