Since I've had a few questions on the new #NFL IR rules in my DMs, figured it would be easier to just do a thread.

Here are the big changes.
Old rule: Only 2 designated players can return from IR, after 8 weeks.

2020 Rule: Unlimited returns, after 3 weeks.

Why it matters? Harder to predict amount of time we can expect players to miss. Could be 4 weeks, could be 8.

All the more reason to follow an injury analyst.
Players placed on IR prior to 4pm yesterday will remain on IR all year and are not eligible to return.

This isn't different from a normal year.
Old rule: Any practice squad player can be signed by another team

New Rule: 4 players can be deemed "protected" by each team

Why it matters?

Teams can now stop other squads from poaching certain players or forcing them to sign players onto their active rosters.
Old rule: Teams had to sign players from practice squad to promote to gameday roster

2020 rule: 2 players can be promoted every week as special 54/55th man on roster then return to practice squad next day without hitting waivers

This can happen 2x per player.
Why it matters?

Teams can now make emergency call ups if impacted by covid without risk of losing those players to waivers.

More flexibilty if game day changes need made.
Old rule: Only 47 active roster spots per team

2020 Rule: 48 allowed IF the team uses 8 OL

I expect most teams to now carry 8 OL players every game.
Old rule: Covid doesn't exist.

2020 Rule: r/COVID list allows players to be placed indefinitely if they have tested + or been exposed to covid. They don't count against 53 man roster.

I am a bit worried this may be abused in some situations, but we will have to wait and see.
