I think the govt are firing a shot across the EU's bow. If there isn't a future relationship they will abandon the NI protocol.

When you think about it the EU would have no way to enforce the UK's obligations if there isn't a future relationship.

The one country that will be crapping themselves tonight is the RoI. If there isn't a future relationship then the EU may decide to lock out the RoI from the single market.

Expect the Irish to be ringing round their mates in the democratic party to help protect them. I wouldn't be surprised if some in congress make threats over the future trade deal with the USA.
