My reflections from helping 60 brand new year 7s log on to our network on Friday.

How do I know? Behold my experiences in those two stressful hours....

The student’s user names include an underscore, most had no idea what that character was and I had to explain in great detail what buttons to press to get one - some had no idea what the ‘shift’ key was..
The generic password they used to log in had a capital letter at the beginning. They don’t know how to get a capital without the caps lock key, which played havoc with the rest of the password.
Once we’d got over the hurdle of the generic password, I had to explain how to make a secure password that the network would accept...

So many didn’t know what to do when asked to enter the same password twice - they don’t read the text in messages.
Some tried to use their names (despite my advice/guidance) as new passwords and didn’t understand why that was a bad idea and not accepted.
Then, when most were logged on with a new password (that I made them write down), I tried to achieve my original goal and asked them (demonstrated) to open a browser, search for ‘office 365’ and log in, at least one student had never used a mouse before...
I had to teach them how to left double click a mouse.
