Happy Birthday Daughter

Today you would have been 21 yrs old, but you died a month and a half ago.

You were so excited about your upcoming birthday. I told you I would have a drink with you.

I'm putting candles on that chocolate cake you loved. I'll have that drink for you.
I'm going to be singing Happy Birthday to you today and celebrating the 20 years you had with us.

I'll be with tears in my eyes and a smile on my face because I'm proud of your life and I miss you beyond words.

Please don't worry about Daddy because you helped make me strong.
Hearing your friends share stories at the memorial helped me understand how many lives you profoundly touched.

They told me you were a loving sister who taught them about being strong to stand up for their beliefs.

For them to be proud to be different and to love themselves.
We stood at the edge of the river that's near the home you lived in for most of your life and where I raised you from a child into a woman.

It was a special place we considered our backyard. You loved sitting with me to watch the boats float by and we talked about whatever.
I remember how you were on the sailing team in high school. You loved telling me stories about your many races in New York's harbor with your friends.

It seemed appropriate to have your memorial by the water as the sun was setting. Your sailing friends and others were with me.
We talked about how you were a fighter who overcame hard times and you supported others to do the same.

You did this with warm smiles and a sense of humor that always found their laughter.

We were crying and smiling about your adventures and the funny stuff you said to us.
In our hands we had letters written to you placed in water lanterns and we lit the tea lights before sending them off into the river.

It was beautiful to see the twinkling lights floating away with our prayers and goodbyes as the moon appeared to show respect.

I could see you.
