I refrained from mocking the sinking MAGA boats yesterday. I think it's cruel to celebrate others' troubles. That said, the reason it resonated with so many is that it was a perfect metaphor for everything Trump. I don't (just) mean his failures, but:
Why did we offer assistance only to sinking boats? Don't all boats matter? Of course, those on Lake Travis focused attention where it's most needed--just as we must with unequal policing and justice. Imagine people in boats that were fine screaming "all boats matter" to rescuers.
How about those in big boats making as much wake as they wanted? Should the safety of those in smaller boats limit their freedom? Or should they follow wake rules--just as we should follow mask rules during a pandemic. On the lake & in the world, our safety depends on each other.
. @realdonaldtrump has unleashed a wave of selfishness that is harming the US. The US wasn't founded on the idea that the individual can do whatever they want. Our freedoms have always come with limitations. We are strongest when we help each other, not when we swamp each other.
