THREAD:

Friend of mine got let go from his dream job this week. Heres what I told him. Some of it I told myself when my dream job turned out to be a disaster. Others I learned with perspective....
1) you have a year left on the contract. That buys you a year to plug every hole in your resume:

Now is the time to visit, write, learn, meet coaches, and be top of mind for influential people when the next job becomes available
2) reframe: the things you've let suffer for the sake of the job, now is the time to put money back into the bank: health, girlfriend, social life, family, hobbies
3) ultimately what you'll regret is what could have been. What would have happened if you saw it through to completion, got to work with X Athlete a little bit longer, won X more games etc. But even the best wonder "what if?", so put it to bed.
4) Ego makes you worry what people will think. Most everyone who said "they got a good one" patted you on the back and jumped on the band wagon won't know or care you're gone now. They're the star of their own movie and they're too wrapped up to worry about yours!
5) Nobody says you don't get another go. Think of every failure or scandal ridden coach or athlete who got another shot. If they get a do over, so do you. Get back on the horse.
6) You didn't let anybody down: the people who truly matter in life can be counted on two hands. The highly held opinion of you they had before the job wasn't changed by the job, and it won't be changed after the job either.
7) Ultimately the price you pay for attaching yourself to an organization is that you're at their mercy. It's over when they say it's over. Go in with your eyes open, make money on the side, and understand the dynamic of the relationship. The higher you go, the shorter you last.
8) Take time and make the next decision or career step with a clear head. The "I'll show them" mindset for decision making feels good at the time, but the clinical decision taken a month later is typically a better decision.
9) Ask yourself what it is you really prize in life. Ask which organisation/s can offer you most of that. Now go out and find them, be valuable to them, and build a relationship with them.
