Starting my Lady Gaga discography relisten... actually haven’t really listened to her catalogue in awhile so let’s see how it goes
i’m starting with the first four today and the final four tomorrow
starting with a modified version of the og ‘The Fame’ tracklisting to include bonus tracks and songs included on later editions
only on Lovegame and jesus christ i miss her
also this was the first song of hers i heard so bonus points for sentimentality
Paparazzi... insanely brilliant still and also the best song here?
Beautiful Dirty Rich is such a jam lol under 3 minutes of glamorous sleaze

a cokehead anthem

also one of my favourite of her mvs
god, remember “cherry cherry boom boom”
a couple things i love about “Eh Eh”

- the background harmonies
- the lead synth line
- the electric piano in the bridge
- the italiancore video
“Poker Face” is the second best song here

It’s a song that’s been written about ad nauseum, so all i’ll say it’s just geniusly written and bangs today
i also really love her phrasing on the “I won’t tell you that I love you...” part during live acoustic performances
“The Fame” is a good thesis statement for the record and her whole deal that era. Doesn’t hurt that it’s super catchy to boot.

I think this song, as well as the other more obviously late 70s/early 80s indebted tracks on the record, is super underrated.
“Money Honey” - eh. Better in its extended form; too bad it’s been out of print since 2008. :/
impressed that i’m still able to sing every word of these songs
not much to say about “Starstruck” except to reiterate that it is the hit that got away

mostly it reminds me of playing gta with my step brother in 2009, him being kinda surprised that the album was Good, Actually
oh also this lol https://twitter.com/kell_barker/status/868455376643125249?s=20
“Again Again” is the better piano tune on the record, and a kinda dry run for the glam rock-ish stylings of next year’s “Speechless.”

actually, these kinda songs are some of my favourite Ga tunes in general. this, “Future Love,” and “Honest Eyes” are my top tunes from the era
please put “Again Again” on streaming @ladygaga
“Boys Boys Boys” is such an anthem. those huge drums... the background vocals on this are so cool, it’s like a whole crowd of doppelgagas are jamming out to the playback. my favourite part of the song is the autotuned “oooOOOOoooOo” harmonies during the chorus
“Paper Gangsta” is a vicious Def Jam diss track. big 808 beats, cutting lyrics, and robotic pitch-corrected vocals.

probably my favourite performance from the first leg of the Monster Ball tour
“Brown Eyes” and “I Like It Rough” are songs that exist

I like the line from the latter “loving me is like chewing pearls”
“Summerboy” makes me feel so nostalgic for the late 00s more than any other song here. It also kinda makes me think of paths not taken; could you imagine if she had pivoted to making more music in this vein?

It actually kinda feels like a “Just Another Day” percursor.
Probably didn’t help the Gwen Stefani comparisons tho lol
also “Disco Heaven” and “Retro Dance Freak” slap you guys are just mean
I’m just gonna say it now, her music from 2007 is god tier
‘The Fame’
4/5

An auspicious debut that set the tone for pop music and culture for the next five years.
Hell, we’re still feeling the reverberations.

Favourite tracks: “Paparazzi,” “Again Again,” “Beautiful, Dirty, Rich”
Onto ‘The Fame Monster’
I may eat my words later, but “Bad Romance” is probably the best thing Gaga has ever done.

I have absolutely nothing interesting to say about this song, so here’s my favourite performance of it:
oh wait i just remembered i based a French assignment on this song/mv in high school lol
My favourite memory of “Alejandro” is having one of the music video channels on in 2010 and my grandmother being genuinely horrified when she saw all 10 minutes of it
she was deeply Catholic and literally said to me “And I thought that Madonna video was bad enough”
I’ve always headcanoned “Monster” was a direct sequel to “Just Dance”
and the “Could I love hiiim?” background vox>>>>>
whoever did the “I love that girl” parts has a permanent home in my heart

rent free!!!!!!!
i was really 13 singing along to that bridge ;___;
“Speechless” is a song that exists and really only comes alive, well, live for me. It is a great detour tho
ew remember signing off with “bubble dreams” LMAO
“Dance In the Dark” is Gaga’s first proper ode to 80s synthpop and it sounds fantastic. She could release that song today and it would still sound fresh. It’s kinda the “Starstruck” of this album in that it would’ve been another smash if given the chance.
I have a “Telephone” story that kinda parallels the “Alejandro” one, except this time it was my dad sitting me down moments after i finished watching it and having a firm discussion with me that i shouldn’t watch because of how “inappropriate” it was.
“So Happy I Could Die” is the other best song here. A surprisingly unambiguously dark lyric about numbing oneself with excesses and fleeting pleasures. Genuinely stunning.
“Teeth” is kinda like “Summerboy” before it in that it’s kinda an anomaly in her discography, this time Gaga going full funk.
I assume it’s so underrated around these parts bc y’all are white, but this one’s great and love to see her really jam out with it one day.
‘The Fame Monster’

4.5/5

Released the following year, ‘The Fame Monster’ functions as a thematic addendum to her debut while also being strong enough (and just stronger generally) to stand as its own LP. This was probably the best pop album of that year and proved that she, as
the kids say, was “the moment.”

Favourite tracks: “Bad Romance,” “So Happy I Could Die,” “Dance In the Dark”
I’m going to take a break, and then I’ll be back with 2011’s ‘Born This Way’

I will say now though that I think I needed this, because it’s really reminding me why I loved her in the first place.
I wouldn’t have even gotten into pop music when I did if it wasn’t for Lady Gaga and Michael Jackson.
Okay, pressing play on ‘Born This Way’ any moment now
“Marry the Night” is just a genius lyric and the production is perfectly balanced between earnestness and bombast. It reminds me of being New York.

I think that could pretty succinctly describe the album in general.

The origin myth video is the best one she’s made to date.
The title track, again like the rest of the album it inhabits, is a deeply flawed, but totally completely earnest and super catchy (and also deceptively weird) pop anthem
Damn, I really wish she’d write something as brilliant and batshit as “Government Hooker” and “Judas” again.

And can we all agree that this is one hell of an opening run of tracks?
“Americano” should be classified as a hatecrime, but at least it gave us this
the techno breakdown of “Hair” still does not work and tears me out of the song by mine
still a great song tho
the run from “Scheiße” to “Black Jesus” is probably still the weirdest stretch of songs you’ll hear on a mainstream pop record of the past decade
now i just really dig the synth tone
“Fashion Of His Love” is a perfect pop song and a sweet tribute to McQueen, you guys are just mean
Now’s probably a good time to talk about the remixes on disc 2. They’re good, like, very good, actually. Many of them could stand to better their album version counterparts (FOHL is one of them).
“Unicorn” (as well as “Electric Chapel”) has grown on me a lot since 2011. I hear how it would work as a great tour opener.
“Heavy Metal Lover” is still pretty hot ngl
all these years later and the last two tracks still make me very, very happy
‘Born This Way’

5/5

This album probably should not work. It is indulgent and over the top and oftentimes outright silly or bizarre. But it’s also extremely earnest songwriting and the production and arrangements are elite.

It is a perfect statement of the artist Lady Gaga was,
and an all-around peak for her as a writer and performer. ‘Born This Way,’ in spite of its faults and indulgences, is a perfect pop album. And perhaps also her last great one.
Favourite Tracks: Marry the Night, The Edge of Glory, Yoü and I, Fashion Of His Love
I’m probably going to stop this thread here (at least as a track-by-track commentary) as it’s flooding the tl and i hate that
