I'm on the #valleyfire today. Will be Tweeting out updates as I get them. Will try to keep them organized in a thread - fire is currently at 4,000 acres and has destroyed 10 structures. At least 2 of those structures are homes.
Regarding road closures, CHP says hard closures in place at Japatul/Carveacre, Japatul/Sequan Truck Trail and Japatul/Hidden Glen.
These are closed to all residents so anyone needing further assistance will need to GIT with Sheriff's Dept.
There are two evac centers set up - one at Steele Canyon High School in Spring Valley and the other at Joan MacQueen Middle School in Alpine.
The blaze is currently threatening structures in the Carveacre and Lawson Valley, Wood Valley, Lyons Valley, Deer Horn Valley and the Sycuan Indian Reservation.
Cause at this point is an apparent tractor fire.
Couple clarifications after speaking with CalFire.
One - although residents told us yesterday that a tractor fire was the apparent cause of the blaze, CalFire has not officially confirmed that and the cause is still under investigation.
Two - There were some new street evacuations this morning. Wanted to share those here: Gaskill Peak, Lost Trail, Hondo Way and Emmanuel Way.
Three - There are several hundred firefighters on this incident including multiple air tankers and helicopters. We're also getting resources from out of county, including crews from OC and LA.
And fourth - regarding the threatened areas I listed earlier. That info came from an incident page run by the Cleveland National Forest, but Cal Fire (lead on this fire) says if a community is threatened, they will likely find themselves under an evacuation order.
For now, it's most accurate to say that Carveacre is threatened and has been evacuated.
Also, the evac center at Joan MacQueen Middle School in Alpine has been closed. Head to Steele Canyon if you need shelter.
All, as a service to our community, know all #valleyfire coverage will be free to access, no subscription necessary. This will apply to fire-related coverage as well.
Staffer here just got an alert from SDSheriff saying an evacuation order has been issued for Lyons Valley Road between Japatul and Honey Springs.
Still working on getting updated information on the current shape of the fire, the current rate of spread and the direction it's moving, all.
Update on the Children's Nature Retreat Foundation. They were able to evacuate about 3/4 of the animals, but the bison, camels, watusis, zebras and cows wouldn't get in the trailers.
They're hopeful the wind doesn't shift bringing flames to the property.
"At this point, we just need prayers," said Agnes Barrelet, executive director of the sanctuary.
In the absence of better map information, this county emergency map is actually pretty great: https://www.sdcountyemergency.com/content/oesemergency/en-us/maps.html
Staffer here received another evacuation order from the Sheriff's Dept., this time for Lyons Valley to Barrett Lake & Barber Mountain north to Horsethief.
Eek! Deleted a typo. Retweeted something on this but to keep this thread neat, #valleyfire has now charred 5,350 acres and is 1% contained. Blaze moving at a dangerous to critical rate of spread and is headed east. Could shift west if the Santa Ana winds roll through, though.
Structures are being threatened in Carveacre, Lawson Valley, Wood Valley, Lyons Valley, Deer Horn Valley and Sycuan Indian Reservation.
