After being sold to US-based Dorilton Capital last month, the Williams family steps down from their management role and bids adieu to Williams Racing.

A thread looking at the legacy of one of the most successful teams in Formula1 history.
1977 - Williams F1 is founded by Sir Frank Williams. 43 years on, all Williams F1 cars bear the prefix FW - initials of their Team Principal.

It takes 2 years to get their first win when Clay Regazzoni wins the 1978 British Grand Prix.
1980 is a fantastic year. Williams bags the Constructors' title and their driver Alan Jones winning the Drivers' title.
In 1986, founder-owner Sir Frank Williams meets with a horrific accident in France, that renders him tetraplegic, forcing him to use a wheelchair. However, he continues to lead the team. Later, his daughter, Claire, later assumes duties as deputy team principal.
1994, Imola - Williams driver Ayrton Senna, considered one of the greatest F1 drivers of all times, crashes and succumbs to his injuries. Williams, however, win the Constructors' title that year. They win 2 more titles - in 1996 and 1997, the latter being their last.
Over the years, Famous Williams drivers include father-son duo Keke Rosberg and Nico Rosberg, Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, David Coulthard, Jenson Button, Alain Prost, Nelson Piquet, Ayrton Senna, Jacques Villeneuve, Rubens Barrichello and Felipe Massa.
Of the drivers on the 2020 grid, Valtteri Bottas, Nico Hülkenberg (who raced in the absence of Sergio Perez) and Lance Stroll have raced for Williams earlier apart from their current drivers - George Russell and Nicholas Latifi.
2018 - Tough times as they score only 7 points and finish last in the Constructors' standings. 2019 starts off on the worst possible note as they can't get a car ready in time for pre-season testing. The team struggles all season, ending 10th and last, securing just one point.
Williams then loses their title sponsor, ROKiT, in May 2020 just months before the start of the 2020 Formula1 season that is delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A disastrous season and a 13 million pound loss recorded in 2019 means Williams is put up for sale.
Dorilton Capital acquires the team for 152 million euros. Claire Williams declines the offer to stay on as Team Principal.

Fun fact: Mercedes-Benz AMG F1 team boss, Toto Wolff owns a minority stake in Williams racing, that he acquired way back in 2009
Quick stats:

- 9-time Constructors' Champions, second only to Ferrari
- 7 Driver's Championships
- 114 victories
- 312 podiums
- 128 poles

As of 2020, they are one among only four teams that have won more than 100 races, alongside Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes.
Today's race at Monza was the last race where a Williams family member leads the team. A new leadership will be announced soon. The cars, however, will continue to race under the Williams brand.
Farewell, Sir Frank and Claire. Formula1 will miss you. Hope the Williams legacy lives on and the glory years return.
