Just thinking about how many times in my life people in the U.S. have asked me if we live in tents, ride camels or wear burkas in Lebanon. Adult people. The problem is that educated Americans are often surrounded by other educated people, and forget it's not the norm.
Just 1/3 of Americans have a bachelor's degree. To be clear, there is no shame is not having one, but it does usually impact one's level of understanding of the world. If you haven't learned the facts in school, it's easy to reject them in favor of what you want to believe.
