Real talk.

"I've lost my job. Don't know what's next."
"Rather work elsewhere than endure this pay-cut."
"Do I continue paying rent or vacate & go home?"
"My best friend got sacked! How can I help?"

Heard (or said) any version of these sentences recently?

This 🧵is for you.
You aren't the only ones dealing with such uncertainties.

Due to the ongoing global crisis, in the last 150 days, over 18900000 Indians have experienced this first-hand.

Most of them watched their source of financial stability vapourise — an emotionally crippling experience.
The moment our pillar of financial stability wobbles, problems begin to compound. It adversely affects other areas of our life & relationships. It wreaks havoc on our mental well-being as well.

Unfortunately, as @fayedsouza said, this crucial topic isn’t in the limelight.
Fintech startup #epiFi decided to do something about this. Rather than randomly posting BS on Insta with the hashtag 'MentalHealth', they partnered with therapists from @KahaMind.

I was roped in to anchor the discussions.
What I learned, hit home — big time.
The qualified therapists helped me gain a deeper understanding of how to cope with financial instability.

They cited real-life scenarios surrounding pay cuts and the rising rate of unemployment.

Q. My best friend got sacked! How can I help?

@KahaMind: “Work is an integral part of life.
But, it is also just a part and not the whole."
Q. I've lost my job. I don't know what comes next!

KM: "Grieving over the loss of a job can feel like any other significant loss in your life.
What you're feeling is natural.
No emotion is right or wrong."
Q. It took years to build my career, and now it's all gone.

KM: "Job loss is as easy to personalise as your identity. Your sense of self becomes tied to the work you do and the career you build. It's important to be mindful of that danger."
Q. "Rather work elsewhere than endure this pay-cut.
Where do I start?"

KM: "When there's a threat of salary reduction, anxiety tends to loom large and sheds a spotlight on your worst fears and insecurities."
Q. Being jobless feels like I’m a rudderless boat floating in still waters.

KM: "Surround yourself with people who will be supportive. Let them give you a chance to vent, be vulnerable or even sit with you in silence."
Q. I'm uncertain about attending interviews again.

KM: "In such scenarios, it's best to focus on things you have complete authority over. Try not to dwell on negative thoughts."
Q. My flatmate and I worked for the same company. But, she got laid off!

KM: "Bombarding them with questions (What next? What do you want to do?) at this point might not be very helpful."
The rickety status of the economy and the fluctuation it creates in all our lives can be strenuous. Not just on personal finance but our psychological well-being as well.

There are no one-size-fits-all solutions when it comes to mental health.
If you feel like you need guidance during these trying times – ask for it. With the right kind of help, you can stop running away from uncertainty.

Better still, you can turn around and face it.

Stare it in the eye. Make it blink. Watch it shrink.
