Today is 906 Day. I'm going to share 10 of my photos of the UP that show why this place - our homeland - is awesome.

First up: Sunrise over Bay Mills Indian Community from the Mission Hill Overlook
Second 906 Day Photo: Minutes before a spring sunrise over Waishkey Bay at Bay Mills. This is literally my backyard.

The latitude, the Lake, and the sky do amazing things with the light
Third 906 Day Photo: An evening paddle on Lake Superior at Whitefish Bay. The Big Lake is famous for its violent storms. But it is also capable of indescribable serenity.
Fourth 906 Day Photo: Fancy shawl dancers at the Bay Mills Pow Wow. The Yoop is the homeland for Lake Superior Ojibwe People. Not just the past. But today, and tomorrow.
Fifth 906 Day photo: A summer evening at Tahquamenon Falls - the largest waterfall in the eastern United States. This is just a one hour drive from Bay Mills, south of Whitefish Point.
Sixth 906 Day Photo: A day at the beach. People don't often associate Lake Superior with swimming and beach-going. Whitefish Bay has shallow, turquoise waters and miles of vacant sandy beaches. If you can avoid the flies, they are some of the best beaches in the world.
Seventh 906 Day Photo: Ships & Northern Lights. Freighters are ubiquitous around here. With few people, there is little light pollution to blot out the northern lights. If you're lucky, you can spot both at the same time - like here at Pt. Iroquois Lighthouse in Bay Mills.
Eighth 906 Day Photo: Fall colors. The mix of so many different types of hardwoods, along with the lighting, makes for a vibrant fall color show up here. This is Wagner Falls in Munising.
Ninth 906 Day Photo: Winter is long here. It's true. Sometimes stretching from November to April (with short days). But it is quiet, peaceful, and beautiful. In this shot, the sun catches the ice on swamp trees at Bay Mills Indian Community.
Tenth 906 Day Photo: After the sun sets, the light lingers here. Montana is famous for its "Big Sky," but the lakes in the Yoop let you see far to the horizon. This shot is taken over a large pond on our rez here at Bay Mills after an early winter sunset.
I know I said 10 photos of the Yoop for 906 Day. But, I've got a few others for ya. The Northern Lights and the Big Dipper over @LakeSuperior
Bonus 906 Day Photo numero dos: Pt. Iroquois Lighthouse in winter. There are tons of lighthouses up here (publicly accessible and usually free), where you can access the shoreline, take photos, learn history, or just enjoy some solitude.
Last 906 Day Photo (maybe): Sunset on Lake Superior. Because why not? It's amazing.
