A TRIAL THREAD

You ever had a family DIY task to do that you didn’t fancy much?

Or perhaps a homework assignment that you’ve been dreading?

You know you should just get it done but somehow other things get in the way.

This is called procrastination. 1/8
People procrastinate when they find things boring, difficult or frightening.

Being prosecuted for a criminal offence might for some people be boring, for almost all people it’s difficult or frightening.

Arraignment is when you have to enter a plea.

GUILTY or NOT GUILTY 2/8
If you’re 😇 that’s easy NOT GUILTY

But what if you’re 👿?

Well you could face up to your wrongdoing, take the discount on sentence and plead GUILTY. Get the difficult and frightening part over and done with. 3/8
But if you’re a procrastinator, or a chancer or just a bit of a coward then NOT GUILTY will buy you time.

Pretend it will all go away, maybe the victim will die or disappear or just not turn up.

Sure there’ll be a trial one day but manaña. 4/8
Many criminals plead GUILTY on the day of trial. The time for procrastinating is over, the sands have run out and the fateful day has arrived.

It’s the main reason the courts, infuriatingly, have warned lists and backer trials. 5/8
If the time between arraignment and trial is a few weeks is the procrastination really worth it?

Why not just rip the plaster off at the first time of asking?

But if it’s months or (and I can hardly believe I’m saying this) years - what then? 6/8
The government’s total failure to operate a proper and efficient trial process for YEARS now NOT SINCE COVID has been a procrastinator’s paradise. A charter for criminals to try their luck. It is victims of crime that suffer from this waiting. 7/8
The message for the government is simple: DO YOUR HOMEWORK NOW. 8/8
