To review, in like 2 days the “anti-cancel-culture” President has
Banned Critical Race Theory
Called for firing of Fox’s Jennifer Griffin
Called for Harassing Laurene Powell Jobs
And...suggested defunding California public schools for assigning the 1619 project.

I point this out not to just get everyone all riled up but to highlight that the anti Cancel Culture stuff thrown at us during the RNC Is not about “free speech” and “open dialogue” at all.
But being against “Cancel Culture“ polls well Even if ppl don’t agree on what it is...

Maybe people don’t like the idea of their old words coming up and being used against them. And there are reasons why, as a culture, that is something we probably want to think through a bit in terms of the implications of calling for regular people to be harassed or fired etc...
For a great nuanced look, NYT The Daily cancel culture episode two where @Jonesieman

My larger point is that the term itself is generally used strategically by folks not operating in good faith. It seems to endorse a world view that absolves people of responsibility for their words and actions and does so in a very specific context: race, gender, and sexuality.
Meaning: “I should be allowed to use terminology that is derogatory to various groups of people without suffering social, cultural, or economic consequences of those words.”
Best part of this is being RTed by MAGAs who think I’m cheering for the prez here lololol
