Occurs to me that some of the folks saying they are teaching critical race theory may be appropriators.
They hope critical race theory as a whole will be the target, thus sheltering them. Conservatives have always attacked CRT. They always attack black people speaking up on race.
CRT was a classification system I think. It was a way to bring together post Civil Rights era writings on the theme of racial justice. Some people wanted to distinguish those from earlier black writings. I see little distinction.
But I think it was felt a title was needed to enhance the legitimacy of the effort when those in power claimed writings about race were not theoretical (but writings that assumed no racism as a factor and a white European heritage were so).
I have never claimed to be a critical race theorist and when asked I have always rejected the title. Groups can restrain as well as advance.
But others have identified themes of critical race theory in some of my work. Fine with me.
One such article is Finding the Oscar. I use the story told there to analyze the impact of race discrimination on the ability of black families to pass wealth from generation to generation. https://scholarship.law.gwu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1030&context=faculty_publications
I consider myself a scholar who incorporates my perspectives, including that of foundational blacks and women, into my work just as @SwipeWright incorporates his. One cannot help it.
This incorporation is often unconsciously done up front, in the choice of ideas one chooses to study or ideas one includes or excludes. (If one does not “study” a topic, one cannot find the “theory.”)
Critical race theory is, therefore not new. It stands with feminist theory, “queer” theory, and with so called “mainstream” theory. Even its “new” name CRT is 40 plus years old. Stop getting all upset just because race is involved. Attack specific objectionable ideas.
