talking to the roomies about the stereotype that queer people can’t do anything and my working hypothesis is that it’s because home repair, cooking, driving, etc., are all gendered tasks that you learn from a close relationship with a parent who is trying to educate you IN gender
my “you’re a woman now” moment was being taught how to make a gumbo, fig tarts, and boudin
my dad was good about teaching us male-gendered tasks; i can plug & change a tire because of him & use a drill & table saw. but he would never have taken me to work with him, you know?
so a lgbtq person resisting the imposition of gender norms for whatever reason, like I was when i refused to be taught how to curl my hair, or who has a strained relationship with their parents— strained ALONG this fault line- may simply grow up not knowing how to mount a TV
also a more drastic reason for this is that many lgbtq people get kicked out of their homes and don’t have parents to teach them these skills anyway bc of the degree of alienation forced upon them. so
