I read his biography and he was a hero. He was half Greek born in Mozambique to a mother who was half Shangaan. He hated Apartheid. He got a job at the House of Assembly August of that year he killed Verwoerd right inside parliament. He stabbed him in the neck and heart. https://twitter.com/loyisosidimba/status/1302503141687132160
The apartheid government through its doctors ruled him out as mentally unstable because they were embarrassed to tell the world that a sane man had killed Verwoerd. They had worked hard to push the propaganda that Verwoerd was loved by everyone even Black people. Lies of course
Also Tsafendas had embarrassed the apartheid government intelligence. He had entered SA illegally since he was banned for being a communist. He misspelled his name and that’s how he entered. 9 August, a warrant was issued for his deportation but someone was too busy to act on it
He wanted to plant a bomb there by parliament but figured it’ll be nicer to kill only Verwoerd . He bought a gun but they sold him a fake gun so he decided a knife will do the job. He was working as a messenger in parliament by the way .
He was a cool guy. He travelled across the globe and when he ran out of money he’ll fake mental illness so he can be admitted to hospital and have free accommodation and food . He always got fired from jobs in Mozambique because he defended his black coworkers.
This is what Tsafendas said about his decision to kill Verwoerd. ....honestly we must erect his statue there by Church square in Pretoria . Mandela said they were punished in Robben Island when news broke out as if they had participated in the killing of Verwoerd.
He was taken to Robben Island. At that time prisoners like Mandela, Sisulu, Govan Mbeki , Jacob Zuma, Sobukwe were there. In his book it’s not clear if he had any interaction with any of the mentioned names because he was later moved . It’s a very satisfying book to read
Mind you Tsafendas was the person who succeeded in killing Verwoerd but another chap David Pratt who was a millionaire hated apartheid. When Verwoerd banned the ANC on 8 April 1960, Pratt the following day shot Verwoerd twice in the head at the Rand Show. He didn’t die of course
Because he didn’t die from that shooting, Verwoerd believed it was a sign that he was the chosen son of god to carry out apartheid. It boosted his arrogance. Apparently he was rubbing his scar from the Pratt attack when Tsafendas killed him. That’s just so amusing .
The title of the book is “The Man Who Killed Apartheid “ by Harris Dousemetzis with Gerry Loughran. I know @MolotoMothapo thinks the title of the book is an exaggeration but the story is worth the title exaggeration
