Today marks the 65th anniversary of the #Pogrom of #Constantinople when #Turkey launched ethnic cleansing and eliminated the #Greek #Orthodox Minority, violating Articles 38-44 of the Lausanne Treaty, only 22 years after its application.

their freedom, regardless of birth, nationality, language, race or religion. "

That night of Tuesday, September 6, 1955, the #Hellenism of #Constantinople suffered overwhelming damage from rioting crowds and hordes of Turks who, in few hours, destroyed the properties of the Greeks with a single purpose: ethnic cleansing.

-2,000 shoemakers
-2,000 carpenters
-2,700 restaurant workers,
-500 chocolate factory workers
-400 printing houses workers
-400 workers in tire factories
-350 workers in textile mills

The cost of the destruction of #Greek properties (shops in the most prominent areas of #Istanbul, homes, villas, institutions, production units, etc.) amounted to an estimate by the Greek Government of ca. 500,000,000 dollars.

Apart from the magnitude of the damage, the most tragic consequence of #Pogrom1955 was that it marked the end of leading presence of #Hellenism in its natural lands & in #Constantinople ( #Istanbul). Economic hemorrhage & fear forced thousands of Greeks to emigrate to #Greece.

Worth noting that 1 year earlier, a telegram to #British #MFA @FCDOGovUK from the British Consulate in #Athens stated: " #Turkey- #Greece relations are excellent. But if something happens at #Ataturk's house in #Thessaloniki, everything can be perfectly reversed."
