you can yell all u want about how the origins of 1001 nights mixed arab/pers/desi stories but Aladdin’s furthest origin still goes back to a SYRIAN storyteller and i wile were all robbed of an English/Arabic medley of a whole new world

white ppl casted aladdin like “they all look alike to me” and you all stanned smh.

also anybody still trying to convince people that aladdin was supposed to be Chinese is completely ignorant to the translation of the story from Arabic where it says في مكان بعيد في الصين “in a faraway place in China” is a LITERAL and WRONG translation (1/2)

that was a term used in Arabic literature to just refer to a faraway place it’s not meant to refer literally to China. this got lost in translation ( ty white ppl) (2/2)

aladdin was supposed to be that ONE movie where they had to cast us, where they supposed to represent us and ykno what ? they still said nah ur not good enough.

the way they decided to still hodgepodge aladdin was disrespectful to everybody and further encourages people to think of brown culture and brown actors as interchangeable when we are not.

with all do respect to everybody, i get that it’s hard for people to say no to jobs in acting especially for poc but it sucks for me to get excited about a character (in any show) that’s supposed to be arab — played by other brown actors speaking in broken Arabic .

at that point give the character the same background as the actor. stop making it weird and almost orientalist.
