Emily Wonder Lab (hosted by @TheSpaceGal ) is a really important show for a number of reasons (a thread)
Firstly, so often these shows are hosted by men. They might feature women but to have a science show whose main host is women is sadly ground breaking. By having a female host and a diverse cast it shows children that science is for them (I cannot explain how important this is!)
children, particularly girls, form their opinions on what careers they can do really early (as in 6 or 7) and so many of them don’t think that STEM is for them because they do not see people like them doing it! 🎉
Secondly, Emily hosts the show while 9 months pregnant. This should not be as revolutionary as it is, their are over 131million births a year, yet it so very rare to see a pregnant women on our tv screens.
What is that telling young girls, that when they are pregnant they must stop doing what they love?! When I became pregnant I felt it was important to not hide the fact on the @kidsinventstuff YouTube channel.
Over the nine months I became very obviously pregnant and in fact I filmed most of our rainbow unicorn build video in the early stages of labour between contractions.
Well done @netflix and to all those who commission, pitch and produce shows let’s fight for more of this please. Seeing a generation of girls being inspired into STEM by this is exactly what we need at the moment!
