I'm searching for a new place to live and the following have become clear to me:
Whenever you see the word, "luxury" in a property listing, the place is anything but that.
There's very little taste out there or value for money. Nigerian design can be extremely ugly. It doesn't prioritise space, light or greenery.
A lot of what I've seen is "accomodation", not home.
The property search space is extremely inefficient and many estate agents are scattered and disorganised.
At this point, I will find a place by revelation and direct intervention by the Holy Ghost, not normal search. 😃
Someone needs to disrupt the property space in Nigeria. Someone with intellect, sense, compassion and care for the consumer. Because what I've seen is just really bad. Like really bad.
On the island, I went to Richmond and everywhere felt so tight. Narrow streets, same building design, cracking paint. Nicon's environment is great but buildings are formulaic and seem like transplanted clones from another culture. Also better suited for families not single peeps.
Then there are the overpriced monstrosities in Banana Island and Ikoyi. Maybe if you have like 300m you're not using or you just need to diversify your portfolio by force. I couldn't see the simple investment rationale.
Other sensible estates are further out so you need to come to an accomodation with traffic.
The best homes were the ones designed by the landlord to live it. They built the homes for themselves not for commercial purposes.
I think ultimately, to find a sensible home in Nigeria, don't think of it in investment terms. Think of it in based on comfort, peace and vex money if you can afford it.
Ah, another thing. The longer a place has been empty and on the market, the more expensive it becomes not the other way round. Madness.
