the first obama term was bookended by black eyed peas and LMFAO—everyone was alienated by the recession but did everything they could to hide it thru the power of party rocking. but by 2013 adele lorde kendrick lana gotye etc. came and demolished that facade; we never recovered
i don't know what i'm talking about but i also think i'm absolutely right. the highly polished and upbeat popular music of 2008-2012 was a really distinctive cultural moment that just doesn't really resonate anymore, i think. everything is weirder and moodier
not to say it was bad, there was plenty of stuff that was great and a lot of fun. i just don't think a "call me maybe" or a "i gotta feeling" or a "tik tok" or a "fuck you" can work today. no idea where early gaga fits into this dynamic she was like two years early
i guess that was also the era of, like, peak dubstep? remember when that was a thing? but that kind of feels "grittier" without actually being honest about it
my point is that an old town road or a bad guy was impossible seven or eight years ago. i don't know if there's a transition back happening with '80s resurgence peaking this year with dua lipa and new gaga and like doja cat but all that stuff still seems a little more fleshed out
