Odisha Police SPECIAL TACTICAL UNIT (STU)

After the ghastly attacks of 26/11 & Bodhgaya blasts, Odisha police's top brass decide to form a unit to tackle n contain terrorist attacks and sabotage attempts in Urban areas. Hence, in 2013, STU was unveiled.

STU consists of 1 Assualt Group (AG) which has 30 Cdos. The AG is led by an Assistant Commandant who is of the rank of a DySP & has 3 Inspectors under him. Plans were in place to raise one more AG and subsequent raised the unit strength to 100 but it never formalised

The Assualt Group got it's initial 3 months training at NSG's Trg HQ, Manesar and then continued to train with SOG Odisha. The AG is currently stationed at 7th Battalion OSAP in Bhubaneswar. It is shifted to different part of the state as per needs eg- Rath Yatra et.

Command of STU falls under Inspector General (Operations)

Weapons include - Sig 553, H&K MP-5, Glock, B&T MP9, Galil (Galatz) sniper

Men for STU are drawn from Armed Police (OSAP) as well as District Police.

And STU (Special Tactical Unit) should not be confused with STF (Special Task Force) which has been estb to investigate serious crimes, narcotics crime and gang related violence.
