tips to do well in school -- a thread
bef you read:
- im sgrean, in ip stream and sbge (sch based gifted prog) - i have all a/a+ except for mt
- im only in sec sch so im not like super smart,,,this will only be helpful for those around my age
- im in no way a professional so take everything with copious amts of salt
- this wont work for everyone, so with everything, you need to figure it out by yourself. this is just somethings ive noticed among other gep kids and have helped for me as well.
- school is a hoax i hate it but we need to survive in here anyw right? results arent everything so do not feel pressured to excel at something that isn't representative of your self worth. soft skills are way more important than trigo and poem analysis fr

1. the basics + general
2. health and why it matters in acads
3. apps to use
1a.
yall have heard this before: PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS. i cant stress how important this is. i tend to retain info from lessons in which im actively listening, over lessons where im scrolling through twt secretly.
its important for you to know what learning style suits you best. im kinesthetic and auditory, so it helps when im LISTENING and WRITING down most of the things the teacher says, then READING ALOUD or REWRITING during revision, because it helps me remember
vs someone whos a visual learner, then it might be helpful if you make a mindmap or sumn idk those dont work for me. take this test http://www.whatismylearningstyle.com/learning-style-test-1.html to find out your learning style. google tips specific to your style then APPLY THEM DURING LESSON AND REVISION.
1b. MATERIALS AND INTERNET.
its so easy for us to google an answer to a qn but is that really going to help you? not really, no. challenge yourself to do it by yourself, GET IT WRONG THEN LEARN FROM IT. if you really need an answer, go google it, then do a ton of similar+
questions by yourself so you can gain some sort of mastery. in terms of materials, i find that having ONE single book or file helps. you dont need to cross reference from 318371 different things to do your notes. annotate key points directly on your tb/ws in pencil during lesson
its obv bound to get messy so if you want to reorganise it thats up to you how you want to do it. but dont have too many notebooks. its also important for you to access your needs and get supplementary materials accordingly.
eg i have one single math assessment book+
so i can just learn by muscle memory (but i also know that math requires an understanding of formulae) so something that: have a plan for each subject so you know what to do and how to study for it with minimal confusion. the more material you have, the more messy and +
disfunctional your study system.
!! non-related

ill update this later but im posting it now because twitter is being an ass and not letting me save a thread
1c. a bullet journal or timetable.
take down the things you need to do. plan out your revision plan a few days in advance and LOOK before you start your day, then RECHECK every few hours or whatever works, so you stay on track. self management and motivation is something you +
need to cultivate by yourself. no one can help you w that. find a system that works. planning is just a crucial part of it. some people like to decorate it to make it fun but i personally find that a simple journal with contrasting highlight colours to emphasise +
key events and tasks helps me and prevents me from being distracted like "ehh, why my letter y here i write so ugly ah"
1d. WHAT EXACTLY TO STUDY
ok this one ah,, need to ask people alr. learning is not a solitary process by any means (my gep class pretty toxic bleh) SO ASK TEACHERS AND SENIORS for tips and what comes out in exams frequently.
you could also check out past year papers. there's always a pattern TRUST ME. my previous teacher used to give us practice papers from like donkey age ago (no la like from 2010 all the way to 2018), then ask us to tag those concept which keep appearing.
yeah then the whole class aced those subjects so IT WORKS!!! XDDD then find similar questions online to do
a bit aunty lah,, but i have a http://sgtestpaper.com  account lmao it helps it really does
1e. good study habits
yall have heard this multiple times:
neat study area. keep phone and animal crossing faaar away (out of sight, out of mind!) i really dont need to explain this.
also adding on to my timetable point: its good for you to demarcate how much time you need to do a certain task. i find that assigning durations works better than making a rigid schedule, because on top of sch, im juggling 2 instruments and student leadership roles so +
a flexible schedule works better for me.
yeah so this is all pretty basic lol you could always ask google for this. next point: HEALTH.
"yuqi what does health have to do with this" "wlao i busy until cannot even take care of my health #lol" you shut up rn ill tell you why (i sound like an amazon reseller over-promoting my entrepreneurship crash course lmao)
2a. pt1
cw // food
tw // mentions of ed
ok so basically what you put in your body matters. you NEED sufficient food to do well in your studies. i remember when i was running on a serious caloric deficit, my results were... not fantastic. when i sort of+
got my stuff back in order, my results improved by leaps and bounds and i WISH i was kidding but the result slips show. so trust me on this one.
2a. pt 2
eating healthy helps w your results as well. i mean mayb not but its generally more nutritious and HELPS W ENERGY LEVELS. so you'll be more awake and fresh ✨✨✨ studying and during lessons and if it makes your brain bigger then why the hell not https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/11-brain-foods
2b EXERCISE
woah i cant even explain how important exercise is in this. i remember always feeling lethargic during lessons. i worked on gaining back muscle mass i lost because of my ed and! working out always keeps me energised and my mental stamina has improved.
before covid, i ran before lessons on Friday and that was the day where i really felt the most engaged during lessons.
jumping rope is something really simple i totally recommend. or get off the lift halfway and take stairs the remainder of the way. or you could just start your day with some simple stretches
2c keeping awake without coffee
ok this is important because
- caffeine addiction is a real, serious addiction.
- on a less severe scale, taking too much coffee regularly could stop it being effective when you need it. i only take coffee during eoy period and WOO boy it works
if you need a tiny caffeine fix, try tea
- lighter
- more health benefits
- less caffeine but works (for some people, of course)
higher caffeine teas would b
- black tea
- oolong
- green
- white tea

IN THAT ORDER
2d. sleep
look @ my dn i LITERALLY KNOW yall arent getting enough sleep so here's an interesting statistic:
most of the people in my class (so high-achieving, gep kids), actually get around 7 HOURS OF SLEEP. coincidence?? i dont think so.
the golden hours of brain and body repair is 11PM TO 3AM so try to catch that time period. NO I AM NOT SUGGESTING YOU WAKE UP AT 3.01 TO CONTINUE DOING WHATEVER. try to be asleep by midnight and sleep for as long as you can !
also i totally encourage sleeping in on weekends. but i tend to wake up 2 hours later than on weekdays MAX so i can start my day proper and get productive asap.
its important because EVERYONE has 24 hours per day, and some people are more productive because they utilise these 24 hours to the best of their ability.
ok thats it for health... i think. if i ever have a sudden realisation that i left sumn important out ill come back. for now, ill go cook lunch then cont w the apps
2e. COPING MECHANISMS
its important for you to find something that helps you destress. crying, cooking, watching youtube, taking a walk, whatever. as long as they have a calming effect on you and give you some of that good serotonin.
if music helps, make a feel good playlist!! it really helps.
here's mine (a good 40% is kpop so if you're not into that then dont bother #Lol) https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7qJ50IdF2qPPON41Eh78lX?si=KXqPSuUST-SwJLHRvaibCQ
