The Mahaprasada or the divine food of Jagannath temple is cooked in a pious kitchen which is considered as the biggest open air kitchen in the world, mahaprasada is an elaborate preparation of 56 food items offered to the lord namely Sunkundi, Sukhila and Nirmalya
56 types of food items are directly offered to the Lord Jagannath, offering starts off with spice and ends with sweets, cooking is preferred on 240 hearths in earthen pots inside the temple Kitchen,earthen pots are healthier and tastier in comparison to the metallic ones
Quantity of the Mahaprasad remains the same throughout the year & there has never been a shortfall of Prasad for any pilgrim, even During cooking 7 vessels are placed above one another but interesting part is the Topmost vessel get Cooked first
Mahaprasada is contemplated as a divine blessing through which one gets salvation and redemption from his past sins, On an average more then 20,000 devotees takes blessing by taking mahaprasad everyday in temple
