So I played all the Darksiders mainline entries in a binge and I'm going to order them from weakest to strongest before going into strengths and weaknesses of each one

In this order, from first to third, we got 2,1,3

And this isn't saying 3 is bad but I'll get into that
Darksiders is very rudimentary in it's execution, and while how much it stays within a very safe place and doesn't exactly do anything new, it's a very good launching pad for the series

Combat is nice and chunky, since War is a big boi with a big sword

Solid 7/10
2 feels like it did the same thing Doom did with 2016

Speed

Death moves very fast, the game makes an effort to make it clear just how nimble he is compared to War and does it well

2 also takes what 1 did with the story and further explores the setting and lore of the series
The only major downside to 2 is the equipment

It takes a looter shooter approach to your armor and weapons and makes few sets actually worth your time

There's a short list of weapons that can actually level up, and Death's Abyssal armor is the only set that does this as well
Then there's 3

Which isn't a bad game, but it's still a very lack muster entry for the series for a couple reasons
3 takes a different approach, where instead of focusing on building up your arsenal of weapons and gear, you collect new ways to use most of what you have at the beginning of the game
Each Hollow doesn't only just give Fury a new weapon form for Scorn, but a new wrath spell and a new way to traverse or open up the environment

The story is also more focused on Fury's journey on Earth, and while this limits the set pieces this makes the narrative the strongest
3 also, despite being a prequel like every follow up entry besides 2 (which takes place DURING War's journey through Earth) actually moves the plot forward by establishing the very small pocket of humanity is still alive and protected by Fury until War calls forth the Horseman
Now that I've gone through why 3 is an important entry, let's go into why it's the weakest

And that's because everything else, besides most of the combat and the flushing out of Fury's character, is fucking boring
The Darksiders games, are by design, are already very backtracking heavy

And 3 is the worst offender of this, and it doesn't help that the game doesn't have a map that you can look at because you will get lost

Often
And you will go through areas that you thought you completely cleared out of items that you will absolutely need to improve Scorn, it's weapon forms, and ruins

But then you find out that no, you fucking didn't and you NEED a lvl 10 weapon if you enjoy having hair and sanity
Also, with what little equipment you can actually get, much of it actually sucks

This equipment is sets of armor Fury can equip, and the ones you get in the base game (we'll get into that issue soon) suck

You only get a 5% bonus to defense, and 15% to elemental damage
These do not stack when you buy them, they can not improve at least until AFTER you finish the game as far as I know, and they don't even give you some kind of cathartic visual change because they only change the color of Fury's base armor
The only armor sets that are actually worth your time, are in the DLC

That you have to pay to get access to

And the Keepers Of The Void DLC is the only place you can get Fury's Abyssal Armor, which has been accessable in the other games for free
And the improvements these sets give you are substantial and can be improved by the use of Oblivion Ore

Like there's one that heals you for somewhere around 18+ hp for every second you wear it while giving you a massive bonus to straight defense and arcane damage
And you'd think "Oh, well they're just rewards you get for doing stuff, it can't be that bad"

You don't understand

Feasibly speaking, you have to finish most of the game just to actually access the DLC

As in you've fought 5/7 of the Sins and are in the end game of 3
And I already said that you need a +10 weapon at your disposal of you want to actually enjoy your time in the later part of the game, so why would you actively lock access to the prospect of better equipment not only by progress blocks, but 2 pay walls?
Anyways, before this thread gets even longer...

The Darksiders games are very fun and even though 3 is the most painful of the mainline games, they're very worth your time if you enjoy hack and slash games and like the very heavy fantasy aesthetic of the series
Also Genesis is a better Diablo game than 3 is in my personal opinion because you spend more time actually playing the game instead of micro managing every piece of gear you slap on to get a ever increasing DPS count

So go buy it when it gets on discount because if you want
