Eric Kripke said during the show’s Comic Con panel that season two is addressing white nationalism.
Kimiko does not need a “white saviour”. She’s more powerful than all of The Boys combined. Having friends, allies, and a love interest is not the same thing as a “white saviour”. https://twitter.com/jonleebrody/status/1302302460862558208

See what we’re NOT going to do is throw around accusations that Kimiko is another reductive stereotype. Yes, the bar is appallingly low for Asian representation. However, what she’s doing is far beyond any of what we, JAPANESE WOMEN, normally get in Hollywood media.
She fought & disarmed her brother herself. Not a single ‘white saviour’ to be seen. They showed up AFTER she already got him on lock (LITERALLY SHE CHOKED HIM UNCONSCIOUS). Mother’s Milk straight-up told Butcher that Kimiko is “one of us”. They’re a team. They’re the Spice Girls.
The framing also matters. The end of episode 3 is ENTIRELY focused on Kimiko. She is in the centre of the group shot AND the ending is a close-up on her, full of rage and ready to go on her vengeance quest.
Is it annoying that she doesn’t speak? Yes, of course it is! They also hinted at her getting her voice back all the way in season one, followed by an explanation in season 2 of WHY she stopped speaking. Frenchie is NOT her “white saviour”. They have both saved each other.
You can’t get mad at Kimiko for having trauma when ALL OF THESE CHARACTERS have violent unresolved traumas. She didn’t even have a real goddamn name in the comics. The show is making efforts to be better. Bad takes on Kimiko are not welcome, good day!
