Let's try all this again, but going the other way. You fast forward to November 3rd, the time is 7:59pm on the East Coast, and this is the map (yellow is too close to call). How's the night looking?
You turn the clock forward an hour to 8:59pm. None of the initial TCTC states have been called, but a lot more uncertainty on the map this far in. How's the night looking?
You move forward another hour to 9:59pm. The Biden campaign breathes a sigh of relief as VA is called, but several crucial states have already fallen into Trump's column as others remain too close to call. What's going on for everyone watching at this point?
It feels like an eternity has passed, but alas, only another hour as we arrive at 10:59pm. Some heavy-hitting states have fallen, as flashbacks of 2016 are frantically discussed in newsrooms. Both campaigns have fallen completely silent. How are you feeling?
The next hour seems to drag along as we arrive upon 11:59pm. Yet another sigh of relief as Biden wins MI and NH, but panic has flooded the airwaves: one newsroom mistakenly called PA & AZ for Trump, but quickly retracted it. Trump has declared victory anyway.
Yet another hour drags by as the clock shows 12:59am. Biden has not conceded, though Trump has already delivered his victory speech and insisted to the nation that any change of results must be fraudulent. Even so, networks have yet to call the race as key states remain close.
The tension remains strong as the clock strikes noon the next day. Biden flips PA but loses WI. Biden's campaign has hit Trump's victory declaration as premature, though the nation is now staring down the barrel of a possible tie. Trump remains confident as protests have begun.
Tensions build, the newsrooms are silent as the votes trickle in, and come noon on November 5th, Trump has achieved the impossible and flipped Minnesota after overperforming the rurals. The nation avoids a chaotic House vote, but there is great unrest in the streets.
I just want y'all to know this timeline was just as stressful for me to put together as it was for y'all to read. This scenario gives me anxiety and I genuinely hope we go down last night's path instead.
