Nobody believes that I grew up poor.

I had a drug addict for a parent.
I didn& #39;t have a savings account until I was 30.
My family did not own a house when I was growing up.

People are often shocked by this, because I& #39;m white/fairly conventionally attractive/educated. https://twitter.com/NepswirlDaBeard/status/1301931922692562944">https://twitter.com/NepswirlD...
Escaping financial hardship is basically only possible when you are white and live in a nice, white suburb. I was poor, but always fed, clothed, safe. People looked out for and took care of me. College was always on the table for me.
My mom did time in jail when I was a kid, for possession. She left one day, haven& #39;t heard from her since I was 10, don& #39;t know if she is alive. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🤷‍♀️" title="Achselzuckende Frau" aria-label="Emoji: Achselzuckende Frau">
I had exactly 5 outfits for school for a bit. One time I ran out of underwear because all of mine was old/torn/didn& #39;t fit because I grew. My dad didn& #39;t know how to buy girls underwear and got the wrong size. I was worried he couldn& #39;t afford more (didn& #39;t know about returns lol)
My dad bought a house in his 60s. First he& #39;s owned in my lifetime. BUT he paid it off in 7 years because he worked his ass off. Also, he probably wouldn& #39;t have recovered the way he did if he wasn& #39;t white. Let& #39;s be honest.
So anyway, yeah, whitest thing about me is that people assume I have always been at least middle class.

Joke& #39;s on you, fam.
Also, sidebar to that underwear story--my dad was such a champ figuring out how to parent a teen girl given EVERYTHING ELSE ON HIS PLATE (he had cancer, he had to file bankruptcy because of his cancer, he was also raising my significantly disabled brother).
My dad never flinched at buying me pads or tampons, and figured out how to buy underwear for me (you know, before I could drive myself lol) after that first size mishap. He is a superhero and deserves every parenting award ever. For serious.
Hahahaha just thought of this one...

90% of the people I know in Detroit is into cars. Like INTO cars.

People are often shocked when they find out I didn& #39;t have a car until after college. No, my parents didn& #39;t buy me one. No, I couldn& #39;t afford one as a teen.
Meanwhile, my dad& #39;s car when I was a teen was like a $800 super old Buick Century that shook. You think between us we were going to get me a car when that was all he could do for himself? God paying insurance on a car was barely possible back then.
