I’m at the #DCprotest march that’s heading out shortly from Dupont Circle — and some protesters, like Sean here, say they have a message for @MayorBowser: Stop prioritizing your relationship with the police over that with the citizens of the District. #DC
Meanwhile in Southeast #DC, a solemn community and family vigil honoring #DeonKay has been underway. A protest is scheduled to follow to the District 7 police precinct. 👇🏽 https://twitter.com/kemettler/status/1302339976999440395
The march is off, with demonstrators chanting “fuck cops, we don’t do what they want!” And “it’s a revolution!” as the group takes to the street, and onlookers join in from rooftops nearby. #DC
Protesters are invoking the name of #DeonKay, the 18-year-old who was killed by DC police earlier this week. Many out here are carrying signs memorializing the teen.

“Deon Kay!”
“Say it louder!”
“Deon Kay!”
“Rest in power!”

About a dozen bike cops and several police cars are bringing up the rear of this march, as demonstrators wind through residential streets into Adams Morgan, chanting #DeonKay’s name. #dcprotest
A handful of fireworks. Almost immediately, an organizer condemned them: “On Monday night, a black journalist was arrested because you white motherfuckers thought it would be cool and cute to live out your little anarchist fantasies.” He told them to move to the back. #DCprotests
After reciting a detailed account of #DeonKay’s death — including DC police’s reason for stopping the vehicle he was in — the demonstrators ask outdoor diners at Mintwood Place to raise a fist in solidarity. Some do. Many do not. “White silence is violence, fyi!” a woman called.
Marching down 18th St in the heart of Adams Morgan, organizers said they wanted to come back here after a number of white patrons cursed them out during a similar #BlackLivesMatter march last week. Most onlookers today are quiet. Some take photos. A few raise a fist. #DCProtests
The outliers out here are Death Punch and LGBTQ bars Pitchers and A League of Her Own, whose staff came out to give protesters water, wave flags that declare #BlackLivesMatter and stand with fists raised. They’re also letting protesters (and journalists!) use the bathroom. #DC
A well coordinated line of protesters on bicycles ride ahead of these marches as they wind through city streets, blocking traffic and closing off roads and alleyways. Here, they ride ahead as the group turns onto U St. 👇🏽 #DCProtests
Protesters have been using umbrellas all night to block the cameras of onlookers and police officers who try to film the demonstration from their cruisers. #DCprotests
This #DCprotest has now descended on #DC police’s 3rd District station. A line of bike cops swooped in to stand between protesters and the building’s entrance. Dozens of officers out here now, surrounding the building. “These are the pigs who killed #DeonKay,” protesters said. – bei MPD - Third District Station
This officer rode out without a mask on, igniting outrage among the protest who demanded he wear one. A superior officer, it looked like, told him to do so and he put one on amid sarcastic cheers from the crowd. #DCprotests – bei MPD - Third District Station
An emphatic appeal for a “better way” from a protester named Marie, a 40-year-old #DC resident who told these officers that she wakes up every day lately, afraid she will find out someone she knows has been killed by the police. #DCprotests – bei MPD - Third District Station
