Doing a prisoner’s dilemma game with my 9yo and 7yo, but with mini marshmallows

Both cooperate, +3 each.

If one defects, +5 for the defector, +0 for the other.

If they both defect, +1 each.

Their reasoning is hilarious
Explaining the game to 7yo,

Me: Ok, if you both do thumbs up, you each get 3 marshmallows.

Her: I love this game!

Me: But if you go up and he goes down, he gets 5 and you get zero.

Her: I hate this game
When hearing the game setup, they both wanted to:

- make sure the other knew the same rules
- know how many rounds we would play
9yo first round logic:

“I think she wants the 5, and will do thumbs down. And if you go thumbs down, nothing that bad can happen. It’s either 1 or 5. So I choose thumbs down.”
7yo first round logic:

“He’s nice, and he likes fair stuff. I think he will want where we both choose thumbs up. So I’ll choose down.”
They both defected, lolz. They hugged each other giggling after the first round. 9yo: “I love you but I hate you.”
They both defected a second round again. I let them talk after and they came up with an agreement to cooperate.

They invoked the butt promise! https://twitter.com/lisatomic5/status/1292156573528109056
Haha my daughter scammed him anyway

Now he’s at +2, she’s at +7, but she also has to eat a tomato

I wonder if John Nash ever considered the effect of butt promises
They both defected one more round after:

9yo: “Now I know she’s always just going to choose down. Of course I choose down.”

7yo: “He thinks I’ll choose down! So now I have to choose down.”

We have reached an equilibrium!
Ok taking a break for a little bit and gonna let them talk about it again :)
I lost my insider status!

They came up with a plan in secret to “make it so we have an even amount of marshmallows”

“But it’s a 2-round plan”

He did thumbs down and she did up, then they both did up. This seems like a good point to end the game, tied at 11 each.
