Y’all something MESSED UP is happening in Houston right now, and no local media is reporting on it. HISD promised every student in need would receive technology & open virtually, and on the LAST business day before school started, they told everyone, nevermind, change of plans 1/

LAST NIGHT parents got emails saying, “Actually your kid’s not getting a laptop on Tuesday. They’re going to be sent to a “Virtual Learning Center.” What does a virtual learning center look like you ask? Basically it’s a massive computer lab for poor kids from all over the city /

People I know who are HISD admin didn’t find out until yesterday, much less principals, teachers & families. The schools that are to host these VLCs were just as surprised as parents, so there’s no way they are prepared—and those docs make no mention of mask-wearing or PPE! /

Our communities & teachers are resourceful and pull together. If we’d had the summer to prepare, schools could have done fundraisers to get the laptops. But there was NO warning. Now 1000’s of families who thought their kids would learn safely @ home have no choice but to send../

...their kids across-town, to a school they’ve never attended, staffed by ??? teachers who are still in the process of being asked/ordered to go into work after they too had been promised they could work safely from home. And again—no mention of PPE being required or provided. /

It seems like someone has ROYALLY screwed up in HISD, and now thousands of teachers & students are put in a worst-case scenario situation. The city needs accountability, and yet I can’t find anyone reporting on this! Where are you @KHOU? @KPRC2? @HoustonChron? @ABC13News?

Teachers & admin keep messaging me privately, but are afraid to speak out. Parents are freaking out all over my timeline, starting gofundme’s to buy laptops. WHAT IS HAPPENING AND WHERE IS THE MEDIA?

And to be clear—yeah, a lot of the suburbs are opening for in-person learning on Monday, but this is worse than that, because they PROMISED parents & teachers they’d all be able to learn from home until the 11th freaking hour! Every level of the district is panicking & scrambling
