In this social media world, there's no more nuance. Twitter & comments don't allow for meaningful dialogue when it comes to issues that absolutely need more than 280 characters, but I believe in nuance.
Everyone makes decisions in their life based on many factors & assessments..
When taking a stance, I like to consider the "net effect". We live in flawed systems, nothing is pure. So we all make daily choices considering how much we let these flaws affect us. Is there a "net positive" despite the negatives? That's for each of us to judge for ourselves.
Many will boycott Mulan to stand against "China?", but not the Chinese iphones from which they tweet abt the boycott. See, everyone draws lines & shifts them for what they think is the "net positive" in their lives & what fits their agenda. I don't blame them, I do it too.
Do I see issues with Mulan? Yes. Not just the politics of an actor, but also the lack of Asian representation behind the camera. But do I also see why it's a significant milestone for our community which already gets SO FEW chances at major films? Yes. Can I be conflicted? Yes.
Unfortunately for WesternAsians, we're in a "take what we get" situation from mainstream Hollywood. Even worse, we're forced to appreciate any opportunity. This is a bigger problem I'm trying to solve internally (& in small battles through @wongfupro) but that's a diff thread.
ATM, I'm thankful for Asian visibility on this scale, happy for the AsnAm/Kiwi actors, & proud of my Chinese heritage being somewhat portrayed. I'm also disappointed for other reasons. I can be both. Your assessment might land you on a single side. That's ok. For me, nuance.
