Introducing our latest NFL tracking data research project: #NFL3D. To better understand and analyze passing in the NFL, we provide R code to calculate the approximate height (Z coordinate) to the tracking data for any pass attempt in the NFL. https://dutta.github.io/nfl3d.html
Now, for the first time ever, we can compute the exit velocity and launch angle for NFL passes. Which QBs throw the hardest? Which QBs throw the most "bullet" passes? @stat_sam, @Stat_Ron, and I begin to answer that question here. #NFL3D
Using #NFL3D and data from the NGS Highlights package, we found that Patrick Mahomes throws the fastest passes, in terms of both average and max velocity.
We also found that Drew Brees throws the most "bullet" passes (lower launch angles), while Kirk Cousins throws the most "rainbow" like passes (higher launch angles). #NFL3D
We can also look at passing charts in a whole different way. This is Aaron Rodgers passes from the NGS Highlights: #NFL3D
