Hot take!!! Students with disabilities should not have to ‘be our own advocates’ in order to get accommodations!!! We should just get them!!! And teachers should just honor them!!!!!!!
Like,,, we should not have to advocate to get the bare minimum amount of support necessary to succeed
Edit: of course self advocacy is an importance skill to learn! But it shouldn’t determine whether or not a student has access to the tools they need to succeed.
And of course every disabled person is different and has a different experience and this is just my opinion! I personally feel that way too much responsibility was put on me as a really young kid in school. If you had a different experience, I’m not trying to invalidate that!
AND when I say that we are told to 'advocate for ourselves,' I am referring to the idea that the student holds all of the responsibility when it comes to accessibility. We are often told to 'advocate for ourselves' while the actual administration does nothing
I also did not say that disabilities shouldn't be tested and registered. I'm saying that those services should be ENOUGH. I had an IEP AND a 504 and I still had to press my teachers weekly on accommodations.
I muted this thread but here’s what the last thing I’m gonna say: everyone who needs them should get accommodations. Testing should be free and accessible. Self advocacy advocacy is an important skill but should not determine whether or not you get accommodations
