When >70% of our EM residents report high degrees of depersonalization, it’s not surprising to see someone who leads them pair a Tweet like this with a position statement on scope of practice.

Residents learn from the examples we set as attendings, both on shift & behind closed doors.

It’s up to us to set the right example, & emphasize in their training how leading increasingly diverse, interprofessional teams is a pillar of our specialty. /2 https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/acem.12404
This is an obviously divisive Tweet that uses “othering” to try & make a point, so let’s move on to the larger issue:

To the faculty who lead these organizations, tell me, why is now the right time to roll this out? @aaeminfo @CORD_EM @ACEPNow @emresidents
There’s merit to identifying the best term to describe HCWs who obtain either advanced or required training. Super interesting topic.

But zoom out for some high context. The timing lacks empathy, something that we know is critical to providing high-quality, safe patient care. /4
We have been working in a broken healthcare system even before #COVID19.

There aren’t enough physicians to care for everyone in this country, and PAs, NPs, & others do more than just “fill the gaps.” /5
So, TL;DR, there’s literally never been a more important time for us to be collaborative, inclusive, and thoughtful about:
- what we say
- how we say it
- when we say it.

Thinking through these points... that’s #leadership. /7
And finally, at time when there’s such moral distress across our teams, we need more than a position statement.

Show me the data. Make a clear argument that ties your position to patient outcomes, the reason we got into this in the first place. /8
Otherwise, poorly timed lines in the sand threaten the collaborative practice that’s needed everyday in EDs like ours in order to care for our patients. /9
Last point- to the PAs, NPs, & others (RT, pharmacy) who obtain advanced training... whether through a residency, fellowship, or any other aptly named program... we see you, we are grateful for you, & we will continue to advance professionally *because* you are on our teams. /fin
