I of course have no scientific proof for this, but I often think about how modern life and its feats seems to exaggerate a lot of problems people with ADHD have. Our world is a lot more demanding and complicated with social media for example. We have to manage more stimulation.
Not to mention the unnatural amounts of social connections most of us handle, all well beyond the 150 Dunbar number. It’s easy to feel more like a failure in managing all of it, especially with adhd and the demands of a modern society.
It’s easier to deal with the lack of dopamine with access to constant stimulation through modern media, phones and more. But it also introduces a lot more issues for people with adhd I feel, because it makes us more prone to the problems that can come with overuse of those things
Addictions, feeling overwhelmed by having to juggle all these things, problems with managing social connections in conjunction with object permanence, feeling like having many social connections and no close friends. It feels like it makes a lot of adhd things more complex.
Honestly, long story short... while I feel like we’ve gotten better at acknowledging mental disabilities and diagnosis, modern society also seems really complicated for neurodivergent folks with all its distractions and many many moving parts and increased demands.
