A great deal of fuss is being made: the evil RCMP have assigned 8 more firearms to prohibited status on the FRT, and some of them are shotguns, look at them going after hunters!

Let's take a closer look.

First up among these guns that are totally used by all kinds of Canadian hunters, no really, is the brand-new Colt C20 rifle ... which is a 7.62 mm AR-15 rifle just procured by the Canadian Forces as an intermediate sniper rifle.

Next among these guns absolutely commonly used by Canadian hunters is the Mousqueton AMD-5.56, a model of the Ruger Mini-14 developed for (checks notes) ... French police forces. Totally a civilian firearm.

Also, we have the United Defence S5, which is ... an AR-15 manufactured in the Philippines.

... and the Olympic Arms CAR 40, a blowback-operated pistol-calibre carbine built on a standard AR-15 lower. I'm sure all the Canadian hunters using pistol-calibre AR-15-based carbines will be very upset.

So, none of those four represent any kind of overreach by the RCMP, as all are clearly banned by the language of the new regulation.

But wait! The evil, dastardly RCMP have also banned four shotguns, which are totally used for hunting by literally millions of Canadian hunters!

These are the Best Arms BA12, BA612, BA712, and BA812: semi-auto box-magazine shotguns with an underbarrel gas system, made in Turkey. They seem to have been scooped up under the same questionable definition of "variant" I wrote about previously.

So these actually *are* an example of overreach: they are not AR-15s (because underbarrel gas system) but are banned as such.

But ... I'm not going to get too excited about all those Canadian hunters who are using them because, well, I can't find a single Canadian retailer.

(Forgot to mention, three rifles were moved to prohibited status earlier in August. All are prohibited only in the .460 Weatherby Magnum chambering, which is nothing new.)
