Today I learned that in Brazil the number 24 is considered gay. This is because in Jogo de Bicho, a gambling game, all the numbers are associated with animals and number 24 is the deer. But why is the deer gay? https://twitter.com/joel_t_crofts/status/1301791264539635712
According to this convincing essay https://www.moscasdecolores.com/en/gay-slang-collection/veado-gay-dictionary-brazil/ it's because "veado" or deer in Portuguese sounds like "viado", an abbreviation of "transviado" which means "deviant".

It's especially interesting to me because Trinidad has a game similar to Jogo de Bicho called Whe Whe, which is apparently Chinese in origin. The numbers also have symbols attached, since people often pick numbers based on things they see in dreams.
