About a week away from #pitchwars wishlists. Let’s talk choosing mentors!
1st: read those lists! I had a few “faves” who, when wishlists came out, I discovered weren’t a good fit for me.
Take your time & really dig in. PW is months long & intense! You want a good fit.
Absolutely check them out on social media (if they’re active). Read their website. Read their book/s if you can - what better way to get a sense of someone’s style?
Ask questions! That can help narrow down your choices.
Look at what a mentor says about their critique style & the way they work & be honest w/ yourself about your needs.
This is an chance to learn & grow - a mentor can be your guide for stepping outside your comfort zone. Look for someone who you want in your corner on that journey.
PW is hard! Talk to former mentees if you can (of ANY mentor). It was an amazing experience & I highly recommend it!
But it was also some of the hardest, most challenging, emotionally draining work I’ve ever done as a writer & I had 2 awesome mentors seeing me through it.
All that to say: your choice of mentors is not just about a wishlist that matches up. It’s also about how you connect & compatible styles of work, critique & communication.
Do your homework! Take your time! Get to know the mentors.
And if you get requests and/or follow up questions: be honest!
I can’t emphasize this enough - you want a good fit!
That will make the months of hard work easier.
And mentors WANT you to succeed!
